 The main aim of the ITEC Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy is to enable learners to gain the practical and theoretical skills necessary to provide Sports Massage Therapy. It has been designed for practitioners currently working in Sport and Active Leisure, including Osteopaths, Physiotherapists, Sports Therapists and Massage Therapists. The purpose of this specialist qualification is to enrich practitioners’ understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to the application of Sports Massage. It will provide learners with advanced palpation skills and those needed to analyse posture and range of movement. It will also provide practitioners with a range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in Sport and Active Leisure. Practitioners will learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future treatments.
It also aims:
- to provide skills at Level 4 in the Qualifications and Credit Framework for those interested
in the Sport and active leisure industry
- to provide opportunities for staff in the Sport and active leisure industry to gain a Level 4
qualification
- to provide a stepping stone for learners leading into a Level 5 qualification in the Sport
and active leisure Industry
- to sustain the interest of learners wanting to work in the Sport and active leisure industry
- to encourage knowledge and understanding of the Sport and active leisure industry at
Level 4
- to provide opportunities for learners to focus on the development of the major Functional
Skills and the wider Functional Skills in a Sports Massage context such as
communicating with clients, working with others and problem solving
- to provide opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal
qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in employment as a Sports
Massage Therapist
Assessment
This qualification will be internally and externally assessed using the assessment of skills as set
out below. Once all of the treatment evidence documentation, assignments and underpinning
knowledge have been completed the learner will have a final practical examination carried out by
the ITEC Examiner, who will also verify a minimum 10% sample of all treatment evidence
documentation and assignments.
Learners will study the theory and concept of Sports Massage Therapy as well as anatomy and
physiology of the body and how to plan and prepare for Sports Massage Therapy.
Pre requisites
This course is recommended for therapists who already hold a Diploma in Anatomy,
Physiology and Pathology and a recognised Level 3 qualification in Sports Massage or Level 3 Diploma in Massage.
Opportunities for Employment
This certificate enables graduates to conduct Level 4 Sports Massage Therapy in Sports and
Active Leisure Industry - Gym, Health Clubs, Sporting facilities or Spas.
Opportunities for progression
Once learners have achieved the ITEC Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy they may
progress on to other ITEC or equivalent qualifications at Level 3 and 4.
ITEC require 100% attendance in order to obtain the Level 4 Certificate.
Students who do not attend all modules will need to organise tutorials with their tutor to enable them to access missed information. A fee is payable for this service.
 The Sports Massage Association (SMA) welcomes ITEC students graduating with an ITEC Level 3 or 4 Sports Massage Therapy qualification as members of the SMA upon application. You are able to apply for Level 1 Student Membership as soon as you’re in possession of an ITEC student registration number which will bring you many benefits during your studies.
The SMA is the only professional association in the UK dedicated exclusively to sports massage and is widely accepted as the leading independent membership body for sports massage. ITEC Sports Massage Upgrade Course - Level 3 Conversion
We are aware that many sports massage therapists are qualified to level 3 but now wish to upgrade their qualifications to level 4 or 5. Unlike many colleges, which inform students that they need to start again "from scratch", we offer attendance on the level 4 course at a massive reduction in cost.
